The Bibliography of Australian Judaica was published in 1987, with a second edition in 1991. Serge Liberman, himself a creative writer is listed as the author. His starting point was Percy Marks' listing of Australian Judaica of 1930 and 1936. Percy Marks' collection of Judaica is housed in the Mitchell Library, Macquarie Street, Sydney. In essence the work consisted of his personal list of books and reports of societies and institutions, albeit incomplete. The next Jewish publication to list Australian titles was Cecil Roth's Magna Bibliotheca Anglo-Judaica: A Bibliographical Guide to Anglo-Jewish History (5698=1937), published by the Historical Society of England. This work included just ten titles relating to Australian Judaica. Risha Feiglin's Jewish Refugees from Hitler: The Australian Experience as Reflected in the Literature, 1939-1981 (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, 1981) proved to be an invaluable resource as well as John A. Ferguson's seven volume Bibliography of Australia, E. Morris Miller's Australian Literature, 1795-1938 and the updated Frederick Macartney edition of 1950.Liberman dedicated the first edition as follows:
To Nancy Keesing a grand lady who lit the spark and kept the flame alive and to a Frenchman half a world away who, unwittingly, started it all.Besides giving encouragment for the work, Nancy paid for the publication of the book with a generous donation. The first edition was edited and typed by Joy Ruth Young, who worked as a librarian in the Fisher Library and the second by Laura Gallou, who lectured for a time at Sydney University in modern Greek. Two hundred copies of the first edition were printed and sold. Tragically, the data was wiped from the mainline library computer, and this meant all would have to be retyped. On the death of the first editor, Joy Young, a new editor, Laura Gallou was found. The second edition was dedicated to Joy Young. This edition omitted the periodicals section which had been prepared by Marianne Dacy. Serge Libermann, in the meantime had prepared updated material for the second edition. A thousand copies were printed. The work has succeeded in being comprehensive and covers myriad aspects of Australian Jewry's creative output. It is set out thematically. Included in this bibliography are monographs, pamphlets, journal articles and chapters from books which are about Jews in Australia and New Zealand. The first edition also included a union list of Australian Jewish serials. This has been published separately as well. In this year 2004, we realise the need for updates to this bibliography. Thus, there are no works listed in the present printed edition past 1991. We aim to rectify this lack.
In the meantime, copies of the 1991 bibliography can be obtained from the Mandelbaum Trust and are an invaluable resource. A large number of the bibliographies have not been sold.
