The Archive of Australian Judaica is now in its eighteenth year, continuing to function as a special collection within the Rare Books Library of the University of Sydney Library.


The Archive wishes to acknowedge the donations of:

* Mrs Sophie Caplan for her valuable work of collecting ephemera .

*Dr Ivan Cher for a large consignment of papers including material on the Joint Committee for Jewish Tertiary Studies

* Mrs Ilana Cohen for additional ephemera, and information from the Falk Library and the Great Synagogue, Sydney.

* J. Gani for the papers of Leo Watson (Wozašik), which include the typescript of an unpublished novel: The Tribe that got Lost which details life in Shanghai during World War II for Jewish refugees from Europe and typescripts of unpublished poetry in German and English.

* Mr Harry Leslie for newspaper clippings about his experiences in Singapore during the second World War and the NSW Jewish Ex-Servicemens' Association, NAJEX.

There are still several copies of Wolf Matsdorf's: No Time to Grow: The Story of the Gros Breeseners in Australia, ,vi pp &, 144pp. ($20.00 + postage-$2.00 (Australia)-$5.00 (overseas).

*Mrs Israel Porush for additional archives of Rabbi Israel Porush. The archivist visited her in May, last year, in Melbourne and gathered some material, while the rest was forwarded later. We wish to thank Mr and Mrs Isi and Naomi Leibler, and Prof Bernard Rechter. for organising the delivery of the material. to Sydney.

* Dr Michael Patkin in cooperation with Mrs Benzion Patkin has begun publication of his father's memoirs which he is making available on disc and though email.

Biography of Percy Marks
Mr Yehuda Feher has been collecting material on the Jewish intellectual, Percy Marks, for several years, with the idea of writing a biography. The archivist has agreed to work with him on this project and write the biography.


Mi Adir and Sheva B'rochot and Phantasia Judaica (by Boaz Bischofswerder), which was initially composed on the Dunera may be purchased from the Archivist for $20 each plus postage ($5 local, $10 overseas)

Copies of Monograph No 9: Early Australian Zionism. An Annotated Index of Records in the Central Zionist Archives, Jerusalem. 50pp are also available from the Archivist for $5.00+ $1.00 postage ($3.00 overseas).

In addition, copies of the catalogue will continue to be updated on the internet, as well as some copies printed on request. A print -out of Monograph no 12 will be available in 2000.

Also available from Mrs Nancy Hickson: Semitic Studies, University of Sydney NSW 2006 are some Mandelbaum Trust publications.

Archive Publications in Progress

Sara Gornall is currently reformatting of The Union list of Australian Jewish Periodicals, which may to be downloaded from the archive webpage as a zip file. This second edition of the journal bibliography contains over four hundred annotated titles and details as to where they may be found. It is hoped that bibliography will be published in hard copy later this year.

A second publication, an expanded listing of Australian Jewish archives in the Central Zionist Archives is also in progress. It is hoped that the latter will appear in a printed version.

The Archive continues to attract a wide variety of users who include students from overseas universities, as well as local users who include authors, writers and researchers preparing exhibitions or museum curators.

The Archive wishes to thank the University of Sydney Library, for technical support of the Archive, as well as the Mandelbaum Trust for its financial support and the Friends of the Archive for their ongoing supportof the Archive's special projects.
